About Us

The “Moko” in Mokoseek is derived from Moko Jumbie. In the Caribbean, Moko Jumbies are traditional folk characters that were originally brought from West Africa; they are costumed dancers on stilts that are often seen during carnival. The word "Moko" is based on the name of a West African God and "jumbie" or "ghost" was added by liberated slaves after Emancipation. Moko, the West African spirit, is an ancestral figure who uses its height to overlook the tribal community… protecting it from evil spirits. Trinbagonian novelist, Earl Lovelace, describes them as “seeing beyond the present space and time, providing a sense of history and a vision of the future”.

Mokoseek connects people around the world with information, all while generating revenue for organizations that serve the African Diaspora. A search engine todaytomorrow, an institution aimed at empowering people worldwide.

WHAT IS MOKOSEEK?

Mokoseek is a search engine with a purpose! While you use Mokoseek to search for solutions to your every day questions, or to shop or browse the Web, the revenue generated by your searches and purchases are used to help find solutions to the problems that face the communities of the African Diaspora.

Internet search engine advertising revenue generates billions of dollars. Mokoseek’s goal is to solidify a place in this vast market and divert a portion of this money towards improving the lives of Africans and their descendants worldwide.

HOW MOKOSEEK HELPS TO FIND SOLUTIONS?

Mokoseek helps to find solutions to the problems which face African communities worldwide by:

  • Donating 25% of net income to non-profit entities (our "Moko-Partners") which have a strong record of serving communities within the African Diaspora;
  • Investing an additional 25% of profits in the “Moko-Fund”; a managed fund which will provide communities throughout the African Diaspora with financial resources in their times of need, and;
  • Financing new ventures and web services that further accomplish the company’s goals.

WHAT IS THE MOKO-FUND?

The Moko-Fund is a managed investment fund which will provide communities throughout the African Diaspora with financial resources in their times of need.

The primary purpose of the Moko-Fund is to help empower the African Diaspora financially; providing the monetary means to deal with natural and humanitarian catastrophes without relying heavily on external assistance.

HOW IS MOKOSEEK’S FINANCIAL EFFECTIVENESS MEASURED?

Revenue is raised from advertisers on the Web site and sales within the online store ("The Mokoshop"). A portion of the money raised will be donated to the organizations. Users do not have to pay anything unless they purchase an item from the online store.

The more people search Mokoseek.com, the more money will be donated. Each year, the company will set a quantitatively derived goal for the number of Mokos (searches) that it predicts users will conduct during the reporting period. The goal for 2007, its launch year, is 5 million Mokos. Users can track the number of Mokos-to-date on the homepage at www.Mokoseek.com.

WHAT ARE MOKO-FACTS?

One of Mokoseek’s goals is to increase the accessibility of educational resources and historical information in communities throughout the African Diaspora. The rich knowledge of African history, and the great accomplishments of African people throughout the Diaspora, is central to another of Mokoseek’s goals: the promotion of unity, self-awareness, and pride.

The Moko-Facts section at the top of the homepage, www.Mokoseek.com, allows users to share facts pertaining to the African Diaspora with the entire online community. By double clicking any of the highlighted words in a Moko-Fact, you will be provided with more information about the given topic.

Each time you search Mokoseek, we hope users will learn something new about the people, events, cultures, traditions, and histories of the communities within the African Diaspora. In turn, Mokoseek urges users to share their knowledge with the community as well by sharing a Moko-Fact of their own.
